Rewards for Volunteering
I have been asked many times why I volunteer. Here is one of the examples:
When I was discharging an old man, his wife asked, “Which college do you go to?”
I smiled and answered, “First of all, thank you very much! I graduated from college long time ago. I have been working for years already.”
His wife then asked, “So, what do you do for a living?”
When I explained to them about my job, the patient said, “It sounds like Company XX.” (Bingo. The patient is so smart!) As it turns out, the patient worked as a finance reporter at a radio station before he retired.
Patient’s wife said, “It is very nice of you to be willing to spend your time as a volunteer! Your other half is also very nice. He is willing to share your time with the hospital.”
I answered, “I don’t spend a lot of time, only three hours on Sunday ever week. Besides, especially because I am still single and have not met a nice fellow, I have time to volunteer. Ha ha ha!”
Patient said, “Someone is lucky to have you.”
I said, “Oh, when I wish for a promotion and a pay increase, my mom said my birthday wish should have been meeting a nice guy…”
Patient laughed, “You shouldn’t wish that way. You should wish that a nice guy finds you. Let him find you. You don’t have to find him.”
What an excellent point!
