Hairspray

Boston Opera House

Star Wars Episode III – Revenge of the Sith
A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…
I went to the theatre with my brother to see the first Star Wars movie. It might very well be the first time that I went to a cinema. Growing up, we had the luxury of owning all sorts of Star Wars toys such as Storm Troopers, X-wing fighters, etc. I like Star Wars. However, I am not one of those die hard fans who would dress up like Princess Leia! My hair has never been long enough to make the two big buns anyway.
I saw both Episodes I and II on the opening night. Back then, I needed not worry about buying the tickets. Instead going on the opening night, two days ago, a friend suggested seeing Episode III today. This is the first time ever that I have purchased movie tickets online two days before the show! We were so glad that we went to the theatre more than an hour before the show to find good seats. The theatre was packed.
I am not particularly fond of Episodes I and II. Episode III explains how the cutie pie Anikan Skywalker turns to the dark side and becomes Darth Vader. Before going into the theatre, I knew most of the good guys died in this episode. Somehow, I feel bad for Anikan. Even though there are not many superb dialogues as usual, I still like the movie a lot. It explains a lot of things in Episodes IV, V and VI. I am definitely going to revisit those three movies.
Will there be a third trilogy?
May the Force be with you.

God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.
Hong Kong Movies
I seldom watch movies made in Hong Kong. My impression is that those movies generally do not have any contents. Before last year, one of the Hong Kong movies that gave me some memory was “I Have a Date with Spring”. However, it was about ten years ago when I went to the theatre with my old classmates.
Last October, I took a long flight from Hong Kong back to the US. With mixed emotions, I picked a Hong Kong produced movie called “The Miracle Box” (website: http://www.themiraclebox.com/ and there is a very nice theme song: http://www.themiraclebox.com/boxmenu.html ). Afterwards, I found out it was a religious movie. Additionally, I then recalled an email from my friend’s mother mentioning a female doctor who died from taking care of the SARS patients.
“The Miracle Box” is based on the story of this female doctor. In the movie, there was no well known actor or actress. Or, it might be because I did not pay attention to the Hong Kong movie industry. The story was quite leveled. It talked about how the female doctor met her doctor husband, how she went to Australia for post doc, how her husband had leukemia, and finally how she died from taking care of her SARS patients, went to heaven to reunite with her husband. All these were done in a very calm and tranquil way.
However, this was enough for me to cry. I think the passengers next to me thought that I was nuts, but I did not care. I long for the kind of love reflected in the movie. I also feel that there is a pre-determined purpose for anyone in the world. This also reminds me of the Serenity Prayer: God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change. Courage to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference.

Movie Quote – The Family Man
He takes her in his arms one last time and hugs her tight. Jack looks toward the gate, the line disappearing...Kate grasps his shirt tightly.
Kate Reynolds: I can't seem to let go of you...
Jack Campbell: You hear me complaining about that?
A sober look in Jack's eyes.
Jack: Look, we're at the airport and no one ever thinks clearly at the airport so we should just trust the decision we already made. You've been accepted to one of the best law schools in the country, I've got this internship at Barclay's Bank. We have a great plan, honey...
Kate nods, then, with resolve...
Kate: You want to do something great, Jack? Let's flush the plan...start our lives right now, today...I don't know what that life's gonna look like but I do know it has both of us in it. And I choose us...
Jack is jolted by her words.
Kate: The plan doesn't make us great, Jack. What we have together, that's what makes us great.
Her words sink in...A long moment of decision...He looks toward the gate, only one person left in line...back to Kate...imploring him with her eyes.
Finally...He kisses her deeply on the lips...
Jack: I love you, Kate...
...a smile from Kate...relief...then...
Jack: (taking her face in his hands)...and a year in London's not gonna change that. A hundred years couldn't change that...

Movie Quote – Runaway Bride
Maggie: Every one of those times I was being supportive. Something you won't understand.
Ike: Supportive? You weren't being supportive. You were being scared. Just like now. You are the most lost woman I have ever laid eyes on.
Maggie: Lost!
Ike: That's right. You're so lost you don't even know how you like your eggs.
Maggie: What!?
Ike: With the priest, you liked them scrambled. With the Dead Head, fried. With the bug guy, poached. Now it's egg whites only, thank you very much.
Maggie: That's called changing your mind.
Ike: No, that's called not having a mind of your own. What are you doing, Maggie? You really want to let that man drag you up Annapuma on your honeymoon? You don't want to climb Annapuma.

Movie Quote – My Best Friend’s Wedding
Julianne Potter: Nine years, we've seen each other through everything. Losing jobs, losing parents, losing lovers... traveled all over, we've had the best times. The best times of my life, maybe. Just drinking and talking. Even over a phone.
Digger Downes: Kindred spirits.
Julianne Potter: No, he's nothing like me. He's like you. Only straight.
No offense taken.
Julianne Potter: He's the salt of the earth. Kind and loyal and generous. The one constant thing in my life, is he'll always be there.

Movie Quote - Bridget Jones's Diary
Daniel Cleaver: Well, the truth is... the truth is, we're the same, Bridge, you and me. You know? We're two people of a certain age... looking for the moment to commit and finding it really hard. And I just think that in the end... it's got to be something extraordinary... something which makes us go that extra mile.

Committed, the Sitcom
I watched Committed, the new NBC sitcom. Yes, sometimes, I am a TV junkie. Nate, the main character, seems so lovable. There was one scene in particular. Nate is supposed to be this brilliant pessimistic guy who has genius relatives that went insane. In order not to become insane, he works in a record store instead of working in the university. He wanted to talk to the girl he liked. However, he was sitting at the desk, drawing out different diagrams of the whole process and possible outcomes before he talked to her. Very neurotic. I like it!
